Below is a summary of each course I have completed throughout this program.

Spring 2017

CEP 817: Learning Technology Through Design

Carmen Richardson, Cui Cheng, Diana Campbell

In CEP 817, I was introduced to the concept of design and what that means in regards to education. I learned about how to design a solution, think through its affordances and constraints, design a prototype, test that prototype, then revisit my design to make appropriate changes. My Problem of Practice Project focused on solving the age-old problem teachers face: the lack of time to adequately address subject matter as deeply as they would like. I created a Google Site as a self-guided module to teach other teachers on how to create a Flipped Classroom.

TE 831: Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology

Dr. Douglas Hartman

In TE 831, I learned about using technology to deliver instruction to a diverse group of learners. I read about the issues that surround implementing technology in today’s classrooms. I explored various tech tools that I had never used before and contemplated how I would use them to make my instruction more effective and meaningful. I created a Repurposed Lesson Plan, where I took a typical lesson that would not generally include a technology resource and I redesigned and implemented it to evaluate the technology’s effectiveness.

Summer 2017

EAD 824: Leading Teacher Learning

Dr. Melissa Usiak

In EAD 824, I explored how to be a teacher-leader and develop engaging professional development for my colleagues. I learned strategies to build relationships and collaboration between adults within an organization. I can now identify what makes a truly successful leader and how both effective and ineffective leaders have shaped me as a teacher.  I can use protocols in professional learning communities to ensure we accomplish the task at hand and grow as a community and professionals. I wrote a proposal for year-long teacher development/ learning opportunities at a brick-and-mortar school in order to improve morale and teacher retention.

ED 800: Concepts in Educational Inquiry

Dr. Steven Weiland,
Nathan Closen

In ED 800, I learned about theories of education and educational reform. I also explored various types of inquiry and how outside factors affect thinking and learning. I completed self-paced modules and wrote essays about participant observation, the impact of technology on education, and life-long learning. I synthesized the variety of hypermedia presented to me in order to draw conclusions, connecting the course material to my own professional growth.

Fall 2017

CEP 813: Electronic Assessment

Colin Gallagher,

Spencer Greenhalgh

In CEP813, I learned about key concepts in designing assessments and evaluating student learning. I also learned the foundations of curriculum and instructional design. I participated (from both a student and teacher perspective!) in formative assessment as I created a rubric for evaluating a digital assessment, designed my own online assessments, and evaluated various content management systems. I took an active role in both giving and receiving quality feedback in order to accomplish the course tasks.

TE 855: Teaching School Mathematics

Luke Tunstall

In TE 855, I learned specifically about how to teach math to diverse learners. I explored the various standards for mathematics education and analyzed their similarities and differences. I took part in weekly discussions regarding how I would implement particular concepts into my own classroom. My final term paper was in the form of a mock journal article comparing issues that students in virtual settings experience to those of students in a traditional brick and mortar setting.

Spring 2018

TE 861C: Action Research in the K-12 Science/Math Classroom

Andrea Varricchione

In TE 861C, I learned about not just the steps involved in writing action research, but also the moral and ethical implications. I participated in formative assessment throughout the semester as I wrote pieces of an action research proposal and received feedback from peers and my instructor. I reviewed research articles pertaining to my particular research question and explored how others' research would apply to my situation. Although the assignment I wrote was only a proposal, I do plan to actually carry out my research to investigate the impact of my instruction.

CEP 805: Learning Math with Technology

Dr. Ralph Putnam,
Paul Reimer

In CEP 805, we spent a large focus of the course learning about different technology tools and resources for integrating into our courses. We analyzed the Standards for Mathematical Practice as well as the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the Process Standards for Mathematics from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). I explored how various tools and resources can be used for the various domains in math education as well as for a range of grade levels. I created a web page for other Algebra teachers to access resources that would assist them in planning and implementing instruction for several key topics in the course.

Summer 2018

CEP 820: Teaching Students Online

Dr. Anne Heintz,

Cui Cheng

As a virtual teacher, I looked forward to this class ever since I began working at my job. I wanted to learn about best-practices in creating engaging, effective online classes, and CEP 820 did just that. I created an online course module that follows not only the most current research in policies and procedures for online students, but I also learned about Universal Design for Learning and applied those principles to my own course.

ED 870: Capstone Portfolio Course

Dr. Matthew Koehler, Sarah Keenan-Lechel, Spencer Greenhalgh, Sukanya Moudgalya

As the culminating class for my Master of Arts in Education degree, the Capstone Seminar required that I assemble a portfolio of artifacts that I created throughout my time in the MAED program. I learned about website design, even more about formative feedback, and ultimately have created a website of which I am very proud. This course encouraged me to put together all of the skills and knowledge that I gained over the last two years into one, cohesive project.
